Bursaries available for teens in Wirral South

Young people living in Wirral South can apply for bursaries to complete the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme for free this summer.

Funded by the Wirral South Constituency Committee, bursaries are available for 27 eligible young people aged 15 to 17 who may not otherwise be able to access NCS due to lack of finances.

NCS is a two to four-week programme that takes place outside of term time in the spring, summer and autumn holidays. It consists of two short stays away from home, outdoor activities, a planning week, and 30 hours of part-time work spent on a community project.

The bursaries provided include the course signup fee (worth £20), the essential kit list – including waterproof jacket, water bottle and sleeping bag (worth £73) – plus £18.50 towards the public transport phase of the programme.

Young people who meet one or more of the below categories can apply:

  • receiving free school meals
  • those who have been in the care service
  • receiving Disability Living Allowance
  • claiming Job Seekers Allowance
  • those who have a carer or family member who claim Carer’s Allowance
  • young people who consider themselves homeless and do not receive benefits

Wirral South Constituency Manager Fergus Adams said: “NCS has been changing the lives of young people for six years in Wirral, giving them the opportunity to make new friends and discover talents they didn’t know they had. We want to make sure that everybody has the chance to access this brilliant programme, so we have made the application process as simple as possible.”

How to apply

Young people wishing to apply for a bursary can do so at Teenwirral.com, where they will be able to complete a short application form. They will need to provide their postcode and contact details, along with some information about what they think they will get from NCS.
